Classic N64 game Perfect Dark gets an unofficial PC port
A great opportunity to revisit this heavily underrated gem.
Rare’s Perfect Dark is a spiritual successor to the legendary GoldenEye 007, arguably one of the most influential shooters ever. If you’ve never checked this gem before on the N64, you will now be able to do so on PC.
Although this is an unofficial port, GitHub user fgshds has made Perfect Dark available on PC and it’s an achievement worth celebrating. This port includes the entire game as we remember it but it also adds some new features like mouselook, widescreen support, and FOV.
The download page notes that the game is “in a mostly functional state”, and indeed, DSO Gaming reports that it has some bugs that need to be ironed out “but not any game-breaking issues.” The only thing you have to consider is that it’s only available in 32-bit mode.
Perfect Dark was developed by Rare, a relatively small British studio that was already well-known for their work on the iconic Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES as well as Banjo-Kazooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and Killer Instinct. Despite getting positive reviews from gamers and critics alike, it didn’t manage to leave a lasting legacy. A reboot is currently in development but we’ll have to wait for a while before we lay our hands on it.
