Sony have announced the production of a slimmer PS5 following years of various rumors and speculation. The new model will start shipping “this holiday season”, and judging from the seasonal stock in most department stores, it started sometime in July.

The slimmer PS5 model retains the same processing power and features the same 1TB hard drive as the original model. The reveal trailer doesn't show a direct comparison between the two models, though, because there isn't a substantial distinction. However, it is described as being more compact, with reductions in size exceeding 30%, and reductions in weight by 18% and 24% respectively. As such, it aligns more closely with the slim redesigns of the PS4 or PS3. The initial launch model of the PS5 was quite massive, so your shelves will likely appreciate the change.

This new PS5 iteration is available in both disc-based and all-digital versions, with the all-digital variant now offering an option to include an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. Interestingly, the vertical stand is sold separately.

The slimmer PS5 model is set to become available in stores "this holiday season." The pricing remains consistent, with the disc-based model priced at $499.99 and the all-digital version at $449.99.
